Behind the Scenes: Scottish Media Academy

Last night (Thursday, July 18th 2013) was the first time that the new events team had put on a Behind the Scenes evening since taking over in April.

The venue was the Scottish Media Academy based in Forth One radio studios. The event instantly generated a huge buzz and quickly reached capacity numbers. Starting at 6pm the group was taken to the Academy for a welcome drink and a quick spot of networking before being taken through the evenings proceedings by Director, Courtnay McLeod.

The group was then split into 3 groups of between 6-8 people and each taken to a different part of the studio for various media themed activities. The atmosphere was fantastic and everyone was very chatty. The tutors made participants feel at ease and encouraged them to let loose and really immerse themselves in the world of radio.

The three activities included making a radio jingle, doing a radio interview and then having a run  through of making your own show including travel, news and presenting.

Tutor Mark Martin from the Saturday Chart Show was a great and insightful host who really showed the group the ins and outs of presenting along with doing a tour of the studio after the activities were done.

The event also coincided with the Scottish Media Academy’s 1st Birthday so there was cake all round to celebrate this landmark.

Catering was provided on the night by Saltire Catering, ECC members who delivered an exquisite spread that was highly commented on by attendees.

The feedback from this event has been one of the most positive ever from any Chamber event that we endeavor to do another event with the SMA in the near future.

    It was an amazing event and great for networking. Nothing better to ease up a conversation with a total stranger than a couple of challenges you have to tackle as a team. And in the meantime you could also find out what it is like to be on the broadcasting end of a radio show!

    Just an idea: Perhaps it would be possible to not just include people’s email addresses and phone numbers to the attendees list but also their social media handles? It would be nice to link up with them on Twitter after an event like that – or even during!

      Thanks so much for your kind and supportive words! Even though this is a fantastic idea about the SM handles, due to the database we use it there is no tool for adding these in, which is a real shame.

      However, I will see what I can do about circulating social media accounts.
